BAGHDAD, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Two explosive-laden drones crashed on Monday evening at the Khurmala oil field in Erbil province in northern Iraq's semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, said local authorities.
According to a statement from the regional Directorate General of Counter Terrorism, two drones crashed in the oil field at 8:20 p.m. and 8:25 p.m. local time (1720 and 1725 GMT).
No casualties were reported, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, said the incident caused only material damage, and coordination is underway to investigate the attack.
Iraq has witnessed an increasing number of drone attacks recently. The Kurdish government frequently blames the pro-Iranian militias for the attacks, which is denied by the federal government in Baghdad.
Earlier in the day, an explosive-laden drone was shot down before dawn near the Erbil International Airport, which hosts a base for the U.S.-led international anti-IS coalition. Earlier this month, another drone was shot down near this airport, and an explosive drone was downed near the base of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the country's northern province of Kirkuk. ■
